How Do I Run This Stupid Thing?

A practical guide for turning a bad idea into a mostly navigable day across Boston.

Do I Have To Run The Whole Thing?

No. Run the full course, run half, join for a few stops, or meet everyone at the finish and claim emotional support status. The course is a route, not a contract.

What Is The Goal?

Have fun. That is it. Not pace, not distance, not proving anything to anyone. If people are laughing, nobody is lost, and everyone gets home with a story, the event worked.

How Do I Follow The Route?

Use the map if you want the full stupid beauty of it. Most bars are closer together in a straight line, but the course is laid out to get close to 2.62 miles between stops.

That said, you do you. Want to detour and see something cool? Do it. Legs tired and you just want the next bar? Also cool. Ditch the map, get to the next stop, and check the back of your buddy's shirt if you forget which bar comes next.

Can I Put It On My Watch?

Yes. Load the route before you start, then let your watch do the nagging while you focus on not taking a scenic detour through regret.

Instructions: Garmin, Apple Watch, Strava.

Do I Have To Drink At Every Stop?

Absolutely not. Beer is optional. Water is encouraged. Food is wise. Skipping a drink is not failure; it is sometimes the first responsible decision of the day.

How Long Does It Take?

Longer than you think. The first Original Course run started around 11:30am and wrapped near 10pm, which is less of a split time and more of a weather system.

What Should I Bring?

ID, card or cash, comfortable shoes, phone charger, weather layers, and whatever snack keeps you from becoming a cautionary tale. You do not have to carry water, but you do have to drink some like a person who wants tomorrow to exist.

Is This Official?

No. This is not a race, not sanctioned, not timed, not staffed, and not affiliated with the Boston Athletic Association or any participating bars. You are responsible for yourself.

Are There Shirts?

Yes. Each course page has its own shirt section. The shirt will not improve your pacing, but it does make the questionable decision easier to explain later.

Run smart, hydrate, eat real food, and remember that finishing is less important than getting everyone home with a story they still want to tell.
